On the Easel

January sees me back at the easel after two weeks off.

When you get absorbed in a painting like this large bass canvas, working can be an absolute joy, with all the potential still in the work and real hope that this could be one of the better ones. It is a difficult painting, with strong light, a wide tonal range and lots of subtleties in the bass, which are mostly in shadow but will still reflect some of the environment. I have all the scales to add yet, which will be at least a day on each bass, but that's always a labour of love and the closest that painting comes to therapy for me.
