The red fox is one of my favourite British mammals though I see a lot fewer now I live in the country than I did in my home town of Oldham.

The otter is one of the most elusive and exciting mammals to watch in the wild and some of my best views have been on the Scotish island of Mull where this photograph was taken, particularly on the shores of Loch Scridain and Salen Bay......

I have always loved the idea of diving with seals but as yet have not had the opportunity to do so. This individual was one of several that followed our boat into the harbour at Kilmore Quay, County Wexford after a trip out to the Saltees. For the most part seals have avoided me but my wife was witness to a large bull following me on a dive in North Haven, Skomer whilst photographing puffins. My only clue to his presence was a very large, loud and worrying splash as I came to the surface, so it is perhaps just as well I didn't meet him on that occasion!

This is as close to seals as I have ever got - two half-grown pups playing in the kelp who very soon disappeared into the gloom!
